Works of the teachers

The library was founded in August 1977 as a structure unit of Sumy branch of Kharkiv agricultural institute after V.V.Dokuchayev.
We are much obliged to the basis library of Kharkiv agricultural institute after V. V .Dokuchayev for having presented the first 2000 books. At the end of 1977 the library counted 5 thousand samples in book fund - books, text-books, reference books, etc. 150 students of agronomical and economic departments, 50 members of scientific-pedagogical staff were the readers of the library.
The floorspace of the library was 35 sq.m, the staff - 2 employees.
The Institute was growing very quickly, the library corresponded to the status of scientific more and more. At least we are independent - since 1997 it has become the library of Sumy Agrarian University. And since August 2001 we has become the Scientific Library of Sumy National Agrarian University.
The book fund of the library is the collection of publications in many fields of knowledge with the total quantity of about 300 thousand (292 thousand) units ( the book fund is increasing at the expense of the library of Sumy Agricultural College, which is a part of the University). The book fund is completed according to the educational programmes, specializations on the departments, thematic direction of the university as: the publications in agronomy, plant protection, zooengineering, veterinary medicine, mechanization of agriculture, industrial and civil engineering, agrarian management, accounting and audit, processing of agricultural produce.

According to the types of publications, the fund has the following indexes:

• books– 208000 copies
• booklets – 43000 copies
• periodical publications – 41000 copies

• home publications – 132000 copies
• russian publications – 152000 copies
• foreign publications – 8000 copies

According to the contents:

• humanitarian – 98000 copies
• natural science – 30000 copies
• technical – 38000 copies
• agricultural - 100000 copies
• fiction – 17000 copies
• others – 9000 copies

Special attention is paid to agricultural and natural science editions, there are about 50%. Humanitarian and fiction editions take the second place, they form the students world outlook. There are three technical departments, which are provided with technical editions.

There are three functional subdivisions:

• a department of acquisition and scientific working of documents;
• a department of service of visitors and book depository;
• information-bibliographical department;

These subdivisions are headed by well-skilled librarians: Tetyana Ivanivna Romanovska, Valentina Yegorovna Lazareva, Valentina Mitrofanovna Semenova are the persons to be of great pleasure to work with due to their competence, erudition, communicative. They are also good helpers and advisers.

Since 1991 the library has been holding on electronic catalogue, first with the help of two native computers "Iskra-1030", 5 years later we had three IBM and 2 years later we had five computers. Today we have seven working places with automatic equipment, two xeroxes and other technical equipment. Today our library has a separate floorspace of 700 sq.m. The largest place is devoted to book service and book fund section. This section has nine subdivisions: scientific, educational №2 on the veterinary department, №3 on the mechanization of agriculture department, there are five reading halls (scientific and educational editions, a hall of periodical editions, two reading-halls in the students hostels); there are chairs libraries, which quickly serve users during practical lessons, tests, credits. All these subdivisions were created as a purpose of making book and a student closer.
 

8000 readers are being served according to the season ticket and 21000 readers have been served by all structural subdivisions. Nowadays the library is an educational and scientific centre, where every day 1700 editions are given by all structural subdivisions for use at home and for work in the reading-hall, in whole, during the year - 500500 editions.

Post-graduate students, competitors, persons, working for doctor's degree use such form of service as interlibrary department (ILP) because sometimes it is not enough to use only the fund of our library for the writing of scientific works and that's why we often order books in other main libraries of national importance: Central Scientific Agricultural Library of Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, Central Scientific Library named after Vernadsky, State Scientific Library named after Korolenko in Kharkiv and many others.
There are16 subscribers, who constantly use Interlibrary loan system, and there have been done 56 orders for them.
Bibliographical department of the scientific library is the information centre of the University. Whereas the department of book depository is the foundation of the library, then the information - bibliographical department is its brains, where the most skilled professionals are working, they can give answers to any question, they know guiding-search apparatus perfectly and master the search methods.
Every month the information - bibliographical department prepares and publishes "Information List of SNAU" -the information about educational, scientific, sport and other measures are received from the deans of departments, chairs and other structural subdivisions of the University. The list provides the transparence of the whole educational, methodic, scientific, brining up activity of SNAU. This is presented on the web-site of the University every month.
During each quarter of the year the university departments receive the current information - "Information List of New Library Receipts". This traditional form is now being done in the electronic variant. The "List" includes not only the titles of books but also the information issues of STI, articles from scientific journals, methodical works, etc.
Methodical recommendations of IBD "Bibliographical Design, Reports, Course and Diploma Projects" are used actively. Students and researchers can receive both samples and methodical recommendations in an electronic variant. IBD is fulfilling the scientific research in studying the effective use of the information issues by all the categories of users. The workers of IBD are highly-qualified, competent, active and devoted to their job. Only such kind of persons must become bibliographers. It's difficult to overvalue the importance of the library in the educational process. Much knowledge is given by the teachers, but much more-books, text-books, collected sums and exercises, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and other documents.
Students like their library, visit it very often, borrow text-books home or prefer working in a reading-hall where they can find the necessary material which renders the subject properly and more interesting , can prepare the answers for the practical classes and seminars. Every day 610-620 students visit the library.
The material and technical basis of the library have been improved for some last years. The floorspace has been increased twice. We have got modern equipment: 7 computers, a TV set, xeroxes and printers. We have bought new books, glass-cases, book-cases, chairs.
The staff of the library is 30 professionally qualified specialists, who are ready to help all categories of visitors, especially students, in different questions in educational, scientific and brining-up activity. Sushchenko Lyubov Grigorovna has been the head master of the library since 1977.
